Privacy Notice

v1.0 · May 2026 · GDPR (Regulation (EU) 2016/679)

Who we are

Data controller: Andrew Iles, operating Help My Vote (helpmyvote.org). Contact: admin@helpmyvote.org.

This notice applies to all visitors to helpmyvote.org.

Data we collect

We collect as little data as possible. This site has no user accounts, no registration, and no forms that collect personal information (other than optional contact by email).

The data we collect breaks into four categories: quiz data (stored only on your device), server logs, privacy-preserving aggregate analytics, and technical cookies.

Quiz data

Your quiz answers never leave your device. All quiz responses and results are stored in your browser's localStorage under the key hmv_quiz_session and hmv_quiz_results. This data is never transmitted to our servers.

If you clear your browser data, your quiz results will be permanently deleted from your device.

Language preference is stored in localStorage under hmv_lang. This is also never transmitted to our servers.

Server logs

Like all websites, our infrastructure generates standard server access logs. These include: IP address, browser type, page requested, timestamp, and referrer. These are used for security and reliability purposes.

Legal basis: Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) — maintaining the security and reliability of the service.

Retention: Server logs are retained for a maximum of 30 days, then automatically deleted.

We do not use server logs to track individual users or for marketing purposes.

Analytics

We use two privacy-preserving analytics services to measure aggregate site usage. Neither sets cookies, stores personal data, or requires a consent banner.

Plausible Analytics

Plausible Analytics is an independent, EU-hosted service that records page views, country-level traffic, and referral sources.

  • No cookies or browser storage.
  • No device fingerprinting or persistent identifier.
  • Your IP address is used only to derive a country estimate and is not stored.

Plausible's privacy documentation: plausible.io/privacy.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

Cloudflare Web Analytics is provided by Cloudflare, Inc., who also host this site. It collects similar aggregate data (page views, device type, country) at the network edge.

  • No cookies or browser storage.
  • No device fingerprinting or persistent identifier.
  • IP addresses are processed transiently to filter bots and derive country, and are not stored alongside analytics data.

Cloudflare's privacy documentation: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any other behavioural-tracking analytics service.

Legal basis: Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) — understanding aggregate site usage to improve the service. Because both services are cookieless and do not store information on your device or identify you individually, no consent is required under the ePrivacy Directive.

Cookies

Help My Vote does not use tracking cookies or analytics cookies. Our analytics provider (see above) is cookieless by design.

The only browser storage we use is localStorage (see Quiz data above). This is a technical storage mechanism, not a cookie, and is not transmitted to any server.

Google Fonts are loaded from Google's servers, which may result in your IP address being shared with Google as part of that request. If this concerns you, you can use a browser extension to block third-party font requests.

Your rights under GDPR

As an EU resident, you have the following rights regarding any personal data we hold:

  • Right of access: Request a copy of your personal data.
  • Right to erasure: Request deletion of your data.
  • Right to rectification: Request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Right to restriction: Request we limit how we use your data.
  • Right to object: Object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Given that the only personal data we hold is server logs (deleted after 30 days and not linked to identifiable individuals in most cases), exercising these rights is straightforward. Contact us at admin@helpmyvote.org.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC) of Malta.

Contact

For any privacy-related questions or to exercise your rights, contact: admin@helpmyvote.org.
