Voting basics

Do I have to rank every candidate?

No. You only have to give a first preference (number 1). After that, you can rank as many or as few of the remaining candidates as you like. You can even stop after your first choice — your vote will still be counted.

Can I vote for candidates from different parties?

Yes. You can give your preferences to candidates from any party, in any order. STV is designed to let you vote across party lines. Your ballot is secret — no one will know how you voted.

What happens if my preferred candidate already has enough votes?

If your first-choice candidate has more votes than needed (the quota), your ballot is transferred to your next preference with a fraction of its original value. This is called a surplus transfer. Your vote still counts toward electing someone else.

How do I know which district I'm in?

Use our District Finder — select your locality to find your district. For the official voter roll, check the Electoral Commission of Malta website.

Why does Malta vote by district?

Malta's STV system uses 13 electoral districts, each electing 5 MPs. This keeps representation local — voters in Gozo elect their own MPs, and communities in different parts of Malta have their own representatives. It also makes the proportional calculation manageable.

What if I make a mistake marking my ballot?

If you make a mistake before submitting your ballot, you can ask the presiding officer for a replacement ballot paper. Once submitted, it cannot be changed. If in doubt, ask a polling station official for help before marking your ballot.

For voter registration and polling station information, visit the Electoral Commission of Malta.

The ballot & the count

How many candidates will be on my ballot?

It varies by district. Malta's 13 districts typically have between 20 and 40 candidates on the ballot. You can see exactly who is standing in your district on the Districts page.

What happens if I mark two candidates with 1?

Your ballot will be declared invalid and will not be counted. Always give only one candidate the number 1. You can give the same number to subsequent preferences only if you skipped a number — but never duplicate the first preference.

Can I use a tick or X instead of a number?

No. You must use numbers. A tick, cross, or any symbol other than a number will invalidate your ballot. Write the number clearly in the box next to your chosen candidate.

What does it mean when my vote "transfers"?

When your first-choice candidate is either elected (with surplus votes) or eliminated, your ballot passes to your next preference. This is the "transferable" part of STV. It ensures your vote has a say in who is elected even if your top choice doesn't need it (or isn't in the running).

When will the election result be announced?

STV counts take longer than simple plurality systems. The count for each district typically takes 1–3 days. Preliminary results may be available on election night, but official results for all districts may not be confirmed until after the weekend following the 30 May election.

The quiz

Is the quiz telling me who to vote for?

No. The quiz is a tool to help you understand how party positions compare to your own views. It shows you a percentage alignment — nothing more. The decision of who to vote for is yours alone, and many factors beyond policy positions are relevant to that choice.

Does my quiz data get sent anywhere?

No. Your quiz answers and results are stored only on your own device (in your browser's local storage). Nothing is transmitted to our servers. If you clear your browser data, your quiz results will be lost.

Why doesn't my top-match party have positions on some topics?

Not all parties have publicly stated positions on every policy topic. Where we have no citable source, we record "no stated position" — which is different from being opposed. Parties with fewer recorded positions will show a lower match score partly due to this data gap, which is clearly indicated.

Why is my match score low for all parties?

A low score across all parties may mean the topics you selected have fewer recorded positions, or that the available party positions are genuinely far from your views. It doesn't mean the quiz is broken — it may simply reflect limited publicly available data at this stage of the campaign.

Can I retake the quiz?

Yes. From the results page, click "Retake quiz" to clear your previous session and start fresh. You can also change your topic selection at the start of a new session.

The data

How up to date is the candidate information?

Tier 1 (AI-sourced) data is reviewed at least weekly during the campaign period. New major statements are reviewed within 48 hours. Tier 2 (candidate-submitted) data is published within 5 working days of receipt. The date each position was last verified is shown in the source citation.

What does Tier 1 / Tier 2 mean?

Tier 1 data is gathered by automated research from public sources (manifestos, official websites, press releases) and reviewed by our editorial team. Tier 2 data is submitted directly by candidates or their authorised representatives. Both tiers require a citable primary source. Tier 2 is labelled with a green indicator.

How do I report incorrect candidate information?

Email admin@helpmyvote.org with the candidate's name, the specific data point you believe is wrong, and a link to a primary source that supports the correction. We'll review within 5 working days. See our full Editorial Policy for the corrections workflow.

Why isn't a candidate showing?

We aim to include all officially registered candidates. If a candidate is missing, it may be because their registration was not yet confirmed when our data was last updated, or they withdrew after publication. Contact us if you believe there's an omission.
